How to Speed Up Your Internet Connection?

How to Speed Up Your Internet Connection?

If you are not satisfied with your internet speed - take action!

First of all, check your internet speed with a speed test tool. Then compare it with your ISP’s promised speed according to your internet plan. If your actual internet speed equals your plan’s maximum speed, we recommend considering faster plans at Broadband Compare.

But in case your internet speed is significantly lower than your current plan offers, we recommend to follow simple instructions below. Follow the action steps in the same order, until the problem is resolved. You can skip the steps that aren’t relevant for your device.

Get your Wifi Router in order:

  • Restart a router, then check the speed again. 9 times out of 10, it’s as simple as that.
  • Try plugging the internet cable directly to your computer, omitting the router. If your internet speed got much faster, then you need to tweak your router’s settings.
  • Reset your router (Google your model for admin access) to the factory settings and set it up from scratch. WARNING: before you do, please make sure to find an appropriate setup guide at your provider’s website, and follow the step-by-step instructions.
  • If the most up to date 802.11ac standard is available in your router’s settings, try to activate it and test your speed again. If not, switch to 802.11n — which is slower, but current standard as well, which supports most of the devices.
  • Try switching to 5-GHz frequency. Your Wi-Fi may work faster using it, however, not all of the devices support it. If you aren’t satisfied with the results, switch back to 2,4-GHz. Or create both networks parallelly, one for 5-GHz, another for 2,4-GHz.
  • Update your router’s firmware. Find the relevant instruction on your router model’s official website.

If none of the above recommendations helped, try taking a more decisive action. Discuss your internet speed problem with your ISP. We know it’s not easy to get hold of broadband support in New Zealand, but it’s worth a try. Perhaps, your ISP will send a specialist to check the hardware or advise to replace your router with a newer one.

Lastly, if you still haven’t got the desired internet speed, try comparing the best plans for your address at Broadband Compare based on other Kiwis’ reviews and your personal preferences.
