Fibre Broadband now available for over 50% of Auckland
Tuesday, 9 August 2016

The latest fibre broadband rollout figures are out and Auckland Fibre Broadband is now available for more than 50% of Auckland.  That’s right… and it is great news for the most populous city in New Zealand to know that more than half of Auckland are now able to get access to ultra-fast broadband.

In the latest update on UFB (Ultra Fast Broasdband) and RBI (Rural Broadband Initiative), the Communications Minister Amy Adams released details of the change in fibre broadband uptake in NZ.  The latest quarterly report on the rollout of high-speed internet covering NZ up to the end of June 2016, showed that nearly 25 per cent of households or businesses were connected to fibre.  Adams said this was an "outstanding achievement this far into the build".

When the ultra fast broadband program began, the Government set a goal of connecting 75 per cent of New Zealanders to ultra-fast broadband (UFB) by 2019.  Ultrafast broadband is technology that allows for peak internet speeds of around 100 megabits per second.

In the latest UFB report we are told that fibre was now available to all homes and businesses in 19 out of 33 towns and cities that the UFB program covers.

In Auckland, Ultra Fast Broadband is available to 52 per cent of households or businesses - up from 48 per cent in the previous quarter.  That can be compared to Wellington Fibre Broadband coverage at 50 per cent, and in Christchurch Fibre Broadband is 67 per cent.

The number of households and businesses connected to UFB increased to 240,625 in the last quarter, up from 196,609 in the previous quarter.  A growth of almost 45,000 new fibre connections.

Adams said the Government had also achieved a separate goal of giving 90 per cent of rural businesses and households access to broadband through the Rural Broadband Initiative making New Zealand well on the way to being one of the best connected countries in the world!
