Busting Common Fibre Broadband Myths

Busting Common Fibre Broadband Myths
Wednesday, 1 November 2017

If you have checked your home address at Broadband Compare's website, and fibre broadband is available, but you’ve heard some scary things about switching, here are some myths that are NOT true:

1. Fibre broadband installation is expensive

That’s far from the truth. At the moment, most providers offer standard residential fibre installations for FREE if you have fibre broadband available on your street. Go ahead to Broadband Compare to check if your address is eligible for fibre connection, compare fibre deals and check if your chosen provider offers a free installation.

2. It costs a lot more than ADSL/VDSL

Not necessarily. The prices for fibre broadband have gone down significantly over the past few years. Broadband providers make fibre deals very appealing, like Orcon’s GIGANTIC 3-month free EXCLUSIVE fibre broadband offer, which rounds up to $59.96/month over the course of a year. It is the same, or even cheaper price for unlimited broadband compared to ADSL/VDSL.

3. My driveway will be a mess

There is always more than one way to install fibre broadband. Usually, a technician will be sent to your address to check the best way to connect to your house with the lowest impact on your property. The connection will also most likely go alongside with your current broadband/phone line, and won’t cause many difficulties.  There are also other options available such as surface mounting the fibre broadband cable to a fence, via overhead cabling and so on… You can discuss all the options with a fibre installation technician (for free) before you commit.

4. I won’t have landline anymore

Most broadband providers offer additional landline option together with their fibre plan. For an additional $5 - $10/month, you won’t sacrifice your phone line. Check all of the fibre deals with a landline at Broadband Compare.

5. I can’t connect fibre broadband if I live in a unit or share a driveway

Although it requires a few more actions than for a single-dwelling unit, it’s quite easy to proceed as well. If you share a driveway or live on a private road, your broadband provider is obliged to notify all the neighbours about fibre installation. In some cases, you’ll need a consent from neighbours before starting. Most providers will do the negotiation for you, and it won’t present any difficulties.

Having got annoying myths out of the way, we hope you’re ready for your new Ultra-Fast broadband connection. Start switching today, and enjoy the fastest internet you can get in New Zealand.
