Telecoms prices dropped by 6% in 2017

Now here at Broadband Compare we don't want to take all the credit for such fabulous savings that are being made on broadband across New Zealand but we like to think that we were at least partly responsible for encouraging competition amoungst the internet providers in NZ.  With almost 300,000 Kiwis comparing broadband plans at Broadband Compare in the last year there is plenty of reasons for the ISPs to remain competitve!

COMPARE BROADBAND PLANS AND SAVE NOW

The real big news for is that whilst telecoms dropped 7%, the price falls are not evenly distributed across the industry types.  According to research company IDC the average price of a home broadband connection on a 100/20 Mbps fibre plan with uncapped data fell from $119.07 to $87.78. That's a 26 percent drop.  Impressive stuff.

Given the fact that only this week the government announced that it was launching an enquiry into electricity pricing it is great that the Telco industry is becoming more and more competitive for consumers withoiout the government having to be involved!  Telecommunications Forum CEO Geoff Thorn agrees and says the cost of comparable utilities have been increasing over time. He says: "The latest figures continue a trend seen across the board in New Zealand since 2006; the real cost of telecommunications services is decreasing, even as the quality and quantity of services provided is increasing."

Commenting further Jason Attewell, Statistics New Zealand's senior manager, Labour Market and Household Statistics says the price consumers pay for technology effectively falls over time. "In the Consumer Price Index, we adjust prices to reflect improved products or services, even if the sticker prices stay the same", he says.
